Saput Poleng the symbol of God and Bad - Bali Island

As you drive down to the road of Bali you may notice statues or shrines wrapped in white and black chequered fabric which is called “Poleng”. Stone statues, shrines on sharp corners, bridges and other dangerous places wear this special dress during times of festival or ceremonies.

The dress or ornamentation consists of three parts: a skirt (sarong), a headdress and a “Saput”, the ceremonial middle piece worn over the skirt. This saput has to worn by those who want to enter a temple or festival site.

color symbol, bali black and white colorWhy is Poleng black or white? To the Balinese Hindus, color is very important; specific meaning or symbols are attached to each color. There is a color for each direction, symbolizing the manifestation of the God, controlling that particular point. White is the color for east, yellow is the color of the west, black or blue for the north and red for the south. Northeast is grey, southeast is pink, and southwest is green. The center is multicolored. This concept is strictly followed when performing ceremonies, specially the one for the universe. One interpretation is that the design of cheques is supposed to one of the oldest designs known to the human race perhaps because it is very simple. The color, black and white, symbolizing the good and the bad, white represents the purity, cleanliness and all good things while black represents the opposite.

Before the invention of a printing system, designs on material were obtained through the weaving process. The third color, the one between black and white appear through this weaving process. This color, grey, symbolizing Man. It is believed that Man lives between good and bad and Man’s entire life is influenced by good and bad. Therefore, it is quiet reasonable to expected Man to be neither one hundred percent good nor one hundred percent bad.
