Tanah Lot Temple - Bali This celebrated but overrated site consists of a small temple perched on a rocky islet some one hundred meters out from the coast. Except at high tide you can walk across over the rock, but you will not be allowed up into the temple –it’s locked except at festival times. But most people have little desire to go there; what they want to do is photograph it from the shore, preferably against the backdrop of a sunset.
A Holy Snake Tanah Lot has little to keep you for more than a very brief visit. You can, while down in the cove, see the supposedly “holy snake” or guardian of the temple, which lies conveniently coiled on a ledge in a small cave. Man will illuminate it for you with a small flashlight and collect a donation for the service. The temple itself has five small thatched shrines and is though to date from sixteenth century when the priest Danghyang Nirartha crossed over to Bali from Java to spreading Hindu Religion. He instructed several temples to be built, and Tanah Lot said to be one of these, as is far more spectacular temple at Uluwatu. Tanah Lot is 12 km (7 ½ miles) from Kediri on the main road from Denpasar to Tabanan. Kediri is 5 km (3 1/8 miles) beyond Kapal, the village where carved architectural details are produced, seemingly for whole of Bali.

There are essentially three places from which this picturesque if slightly tween ensemble can be captured on film; from down in the cove itself, from along the low cliff where the row of small restaurants are situated, and from the headland on the right. From this last position a natural arch in the rocks to the north can also be taken, with Mount Batur in the background.
