Tanjung Benoa - Bali Tanjung Benoa does not get much walk-in business. Although the area has attracted internationally acclaimed hotels over a decade, you still have to know it’s there because you would never find it by accident. Bereft of the banes of hard tourism congestion, noise, crime, and pollution, Tanjung Benoa does not receive nearly as much attention as it deserves.
This is still very much Bali – modern Western in a village setting, a real living and working environment with makeshift warung, school kids riding bikes, mums pushing strollers and parades marching right down the middle of the road; just as they do in the Balinese countryside. New hotels, boutiques and restaurants are constantly being built, affording tourist plenty of options. The area has always attracted major up market hotel chains with reputable internationally recognized names such as Aston, Novotel, Ramada and Conrad. Attracted by the prospect of a greater number of hotel guests, there has been a recent spate of new restaurants being opened while some the older ones have been renovated. When it comes to recreation, the mantra for Tanjung Benoa is marine sport. Water sport company offices line entire strip, facing a gentle and shallow shoreline on the peninsula’s eastern side. At generally lower prices than in Nusa Dua, enthusiasts may enjoy parasailing, scuba diving, snorkeling, water-skiing, glass-bottomed boats, reef fishing and trawling. The intensive training for parasailing takes all of 12 seconds. Its cost about US$ 35 for two to three minutes in the air and it’s a blast!Tanjung Benoa Port, in the relatively quiet village of Benoa on the peninsula’s tip, is a superb place just to sit, while having a drink and taking in all the life of the harbor. Sitting at anchor is a wonderful collection of fishing boats and private yachts along with smaller Indonesian vessels, navy patrol boats, traditional Bugis perahu and rows of jukung pulled up on shore. In this village of narrow lanes, there are Bugis kampong, mosques, and a large red, somewhat garish Chinese Buddhist klenteng facing a big tree surrounded by a traditional open-air market. The temple annexed contains bronze icons salvaged from the shipwreck of a 15th century Chinese vessel and this is proof of along history of Chinese contact.
