Sanur is altogether a very comfortable place – not
cheap, but long established, leafy and reassuring. The beach
may not be Kuta’s but then no beach in Bali is. You
are in Indonesia, just about, when you are in Sanur, whereas
in Nusa Dua further south, despite all their attempts to prove
contrary, you could be on the moon.
Most
of the hotels are of the bungalow type and set in shady tropical
gardens, most of them fronting onto the beach. And the beach
is safe, has yellow sands and colorful fishing boats are sheltered
behind a reef where snorkeling is available, and has a fine
view east with the mountains of central Bali rising grandly
across the bay.
All the tourist facilities available in such profusion in
Kuta are here too, but presented in a more genteel, affluent
way. Sanur is a lush garden where visitors lie on beach bed
under palm trees shipping their Camparis or flop splendidly
into a pool.
Leather traveling bags replace canvas ones. It’s as
discreet and wordly wise as Kuta is fresh and brash and innocent.
You pay your money – rather more than in Kuta, but less
than in Nusa Dua – and you take your choice. Want to
