Bali Painting For centuries artist and craftmen in Bali worked under the patronage of the priest and ruling classes, decorating palace and temple. Art had to followed very stringent guidelines and therefore never gave much thought to be recognized for their art by signing their work. Since the influence of European artist that Balinese learned to express themselves individually and began signing their work. Painting Balinese art acquired some celebrity before the war due to the publicity given it by artists from the West coming to live on the island. They found a prolific but static local tradition, and encouraged the practitioners to experiment on semi-Western lines. The result proved exotic yet familiar, just the thing the well-heeled tourists of the period needed to take home as mementos. But the truth is, thing aren't what they were. Ubud village is the center for Balinese painting both good and mediocre, here at least you will have a chance to inspect a wide range of work.
The so-called young artists were set to work by the Dutch painter Arie Smith in the sixties and are based in Penestanan village, an extention of Ubud. The pictures are vividly colored naive version of daily-life scenes. Of course there are some fine pictures among all these, though originality is not a strong suit in the Balinese hand. But the price are not low, whatever the quality, you will have to start thinking in terms of at least US$200 as your absolute minimum if you want to acquire anything at all reasonable, and that would be a small-sized production.

Balinese painting before the thirties was exclusively concerned with the production of hangings and calendars for temples. Production was centered on Kamasan village, south of Klungkung, and work of this kind is now referred to as being in the Kamasan style. Subjects were scenes from the epic stories, painted in hand-ground paints, and the final result was not unlike a colored version of the wayang kulit shadow puppet plays. For the rest, style are nowdays devided into traditional and young artists. By traditional is meant the style of painting encouraged in the thirties by the Western artists Rudolf Bonnet and Walter Spies, painters who settled in Bali and live in Ubud. These pictures depict daily scenes as well as legendary ones, in restrained colors or even monochcrome. They are comparatively realistic, though filling every corner of the canvas with detail, and lacking any real attempt at light and shade efects.
