Nusa Penida Island - Bali

Nusa Penida lies long and gaunt along the horizon from the east Bali coast, and from Sanur and Benoa its southern cliffs present a magnificently etched spectacle in the late afternoon light. Few tourist, though, ever make it over there.

By contract, the smaller Nusa Lembongan, a short boat trip from Penida, has recently become a rather popular venue for surfers and divers. Together the two islands constitute a fine round tour, one arduous, the other restoring. They make a considerable change from “mainland” Bali

You can go straight to Nusa Lembongan from Sanur. Prahus wait on the beach to the left (north) of the Grand Bali Beach Hotel. There is no regular service and you must approach one of the skippers and negotiate the price. You should leave Sanur early, especially if you plan to come back at same day, as the boatmen don’t like to out on the Badung Strait after mid-afternoon. The trip takes three hours outward from Sanur, but considerably less going back owing to favorable ocean currents.

You cal also, of course, cross over from Nusa Lembongan to Nusa Penida. The inhabitants of the larger island, however, and most of those from Nusa Lembongan as well, take the faster crossing, via Benoa Harbour by cruise ship

Nusa Penida is a limestone plateau, 20 by 16 km (121/2 by 10 miles) and rising to a height of 529 m (1,735 fit). Being limestone, it’s rocky and dry, the rainfall sinking straight into the ground and forming underground caverns. Because of this, the island has always been poor. In the Balinese religious scheme of things it is considered malign and in earlier times convicts from the kingdom of Klungkung were sent there.

Nevertheless, today it supports a population of around 46.000, agriculture has improved after government assistance in building cisterns to catch the rainwater, and seaweed farming – evidence of which can be seen all along the northern coast- seems very promising. A jetty recently completed at Toyapakeh should boost the economy by allowing large vessels to dock and carry away the seaweed and rock (for construction industry) which are the island main products.
