Bedugul
Fifteen kilometers (9 3/8 miles) west of Kintamani and 51 km (31 7/8 miles) north of Denpasar, Bedugul is a lakeside mountain resort that provides welcome relief from the heat and especially the humidity of the coast. Lake Bratan, together with Lake Buyan and Tamblingan, occupies what is in fact another huge caldera, comparable to Batur’s, but in this case the northern walls have slipped seawards and it is consequently neither as distinct nor anything like as impressive. Bali Botanical Garden Half a kilometer from the lake along the road back towards Denpasar, by a flower and vegetable market, a road runs off to the right to the Botanical Gardens. Flowers are being added gradually. At the moment it’s a place for quiet, rather extensive walks among glades, with views up to the wooden hills, and, on the weekday at least, almost total solitude. On an island where a huge variety of tropical and subtropical plants, both native and introduced, flourish with ease, the potential here is clearly immense.

At Candikuning on the edge of the lake (which is in places 35 m or 115 deep) stands the temple of Ulun Danu, set in delightful garden. Temple buildings occupy two minutes offshore islets, and these, with their three and eleven tier meru, are, hardly surprisingly, much photographed. The temple is dedicated to the spirits that control the irrigation system that derive their waters from the lake; there are also Buddhist and Islamic temples close by.
It is possible to be taken by rowing boat on a lake trip lasting approximately 45 minutes to see a cave and visit the Bedugul Hotel and Restaurant. Water skiing and parasailing are on offer. Accomodation and meals can also be had at Bali Hander Country Club which boasts a golf course.
