Bali Traditional Fashion

Many guide books describe the ancient life of Balinese people. One of the most distinct is the clothing or Bali textile. Their traditional costumes, for instance, were simple: men mainly wore simple sarongs headdresses, while women wore kamben for a lower garment with a chest covering. These were worn during ritual activities related to the rites of passage.

However, when it comes to costumes for temple festivities, a significant leap occurred around the 1990s. Without being instructed by any institution, the Balinese traditional costume began to look like a “uniform”. A white shirt called a safari for men with a dark-colored sarong, either of batik or endek (weft ikat cloth) for their lower garment. Men also wear a white destar for their headdress and a piece of slempot over the lower garment and under the shirt. Laymen can be distinguished from temple priest because, on most cases, the temple priests wear their headdress in a closed style, while laymen wear open style.

The women wear cotton or brocade blouses with lace motif, called kebaya, the front of which pinned together. Then, a piece of kamben wraps their lower body and is stringed with a shawl. By and large, the motif of kamben and shash are the same.

From time to time, some elements of this costume develop in accordance with a trend of the fashion industry in its wider context. Other than traditional cloths like endek, geringsing (distinctive clothes of Tenganan community in Karangasem, East Bali) and songket (hand-woven cloth with a raises pattern, usually with gold or silver thread), some have also adopted the Javanese batik of the pineapple fiber. New creation for both model keep on being made. For example, the safari that was formerly made from synthetic fabric is often replaced by the soft cotton-made ‘koko’ shirt.

bali fashion, bali modeTo show condolences, the Balinese wear safaris and headdresses of black color. A few years later came the ones with printed wayang ornaments. Variant of this shirt emerge in different variant darker colors used for attending socio-religious event in combination with batik motif headdresses. Another unique headdress is so called brekele style made from black printed batik on white background. It is not known for sure why it’s called that. The marked look of this headdress lies on looser folding and longer tips than the ordinary ones. This model is preferred by the younger as it was popularized by a renowned Balinese pop singer in one of his clips.

To see Balinese traditional fashion parade you can see at ceremonial opening of Bali Art Festival. The festival is opened by a grand parade presenting the uniqueness of Balinese cloths and attraction from all regencies. At same time, other regions outside Bali take a part at this prestigious annual art event. Plenty of spectators will look on this event as t coincides with school vacation in Indonesia which lasting one month from middle of June until July.
